The Wales Air Ambulance Charity has embraced a decision by NHS Wales to enhance its services.

An independent review found that certain geographical areas, such as North Wales and parts of Mid Wales, highlighted gaps in coverage. To address this, the review suggested combining resources from Welshpool and Caernarfon to create a new base in North Wales. This new base would have two teams working from 8 a.m. to 2 a.m.

The service will continue to be delivered with four helicopters and a fleet of rapid response vehicles.

Speaking on behalf of the Charity’s Trustees, Chief Executive Dr Sue Barnes said: “This is an improvement for all parts of Wales, particularly Mid and North Wales, [which] will be gaining a more local overnight service… Our commitment is, and always will be, to deliver the best possible care with the resources available to us – wherever and whenever it is needed… We believe that a new base operation will be achievable within the next few years.”
